News and Updates

IPD Network Grows!
The search engine optimization and network marketing services for Ironpaper have been strengthened with the addition of new content websites recently added to the network. The new content sites both add new categories and expand the depth of current categories for keyword saturation. Examples of expanded categories are: Kentucky Business Resources and attributed keywords and IT / Information Technology resources and associated keywords.

Search Network gains new focus categories
As part of our efforts to expand the content categories within the IPD Network, we have increased the number of articles and the amount of media within our content sites. Video has been a special focus for content production....especial viral videos and user rated videos. Our latest category: Pet products for fashion crazed dog lovers has been an especially fun category for us. We have even considered getting an office dog, but the mess it could make of papers and spilled coffee was enough to make us reconsider. However, we voted on getting a Blood Hound...and train it to find car keys. Well, for now we're just going to focus on content production and fantasy pet owning.

Internet News and Events Online

Can Cellphones Save Local Newspapers?
Verve Wireless’s mission is to rekindle the local paper industry using mobile technology. Verve provides newspaper publishers tools to create mobile websites, so viewers can read the paper using cell phones. Either company (Verve or the associated newspaper) will then sell ads on those sites. Currently Verve launched mobile versions of 4,000 newspapers from 140 publishers. Verve's clients include the Associated Press, McClatchy, and the New York Times Regional Media Group.

Firefox 3 Launches
The Web is a space of great innovation, and we at Ironpaper would like to celebrate the launch of Firefox 3, which will set the pace of such great innovation online. With many new features, including the smart location bar, one-click bookmarking and blindingly fast performance, Firefox 3 will begin to gain even more market-share in the battle for browser dominance.

Fed Apprives Cell Safety Texts
The U.S. Federal Communications Commission approved a plan that would send emergency alert text messages to cell phone subscribers in crisis situations such as flash floods or suspected terrorist attacks. Wireless companies that participate in the Commercial - Mobile Alert System will transmit text alerts to their subscribers in harm's way. As such technology improves cell companies will also transmit audio messages and video based messages. The FCC set aside a section of the spectrum in the recently concluded 700 MHz auction to build a nationwide wireless network that would double as both a commercial network and a public safety network as part of the plan.

Myspace begins to sell "stuff" to 109 million
News Corporation company MySpace announced plans to squeeze out further revenue from its online operations by pushing more merchandise to its 109 million registered members. Note: MySpace, which News Corporation owner Rupert Murdoch bought for $580 million in 2005, is the most popular and famous social networking web site, with 40 million fans over next best social-networking contender Facebook.

GoDaddy.com Takes Over RegisterFly Domain Names and Customers

Big changes in the internet registry between GoDaddy.com and RegisterFly. With the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers' (ICANN) approval, GoDaddy.com this week obtained all 850,000 generic top-level domain (gTLD) names previously held by RegisterFly. Existing RegisterFly customers will be able to access and manage their domain names from GoDaddy's website, although it appears that many of these customers may stand to lose money invested in Registerfly's services.

Over the last year, much has occurred at RegisterFly; and the result was unhappy customers, phone calls and support requests left unanswered and a barrage of mismanagement. In March of 2007, ICANN terminated RegisterFly's status as an ICANN-accredited registrar due to allegations of corporate fraud. It was noted in a lawsuit that co-owner Kevin Medina dwindled corporate funds for personal use.

Box.net fills a void in Microsoft's service offering
Box.net is beta testing a new plug-in for Microsoft Office that lets users save Office files to their Box.net storage folders. The plug-in works for both Office 2003 / 2007 on Windows XP and Vista, provides users a new Save to Box.net icon. They will give visual notification when the file is uploading and then successfully sent. Users can then access that file anytime on their Box .net Web storage component.

Microsoft's grip on the Internet browser market is slipping.

According to WebSideStory, an independent Internet traffic site, as of April 2005: Internet Explorer use has fallen below 90 percent of the market in the United States and as low as 69 percent in Germany. What's making people leave IE are the numerous security concerns and the simple fact that functionality (tabbed browsing and a built-in Really Simple Syndication - [RSS] - feed reader) promised in version 7 of Internet Explorer, expected to be in beta late this summer, is already available in other browsers. Add to that Microsoft's controversial decision to offer the next version of Internet Explorer only to people running Windows XP SP2, and you can see why those running older versions of Windows are starting to look to new products such as the increasingly popular Firefox web browser.

Virtual Desktops:

Zcubes atempts to emulate a desktop workspace with nearly - 30 - different tools mimicking desktop applications. With most of the tools relegated to things like casual drawing, comic strips and Web browsing, the emphasis of the suite is fun.

G.ho.st (Global Hosted Operating System) calls itself a "virtual computer" which for the most part is true. The service borrows some style cues from Windows XP, and has floating widgets like what you'd find on YourMinis. It uses Pandora as a music jukebox, and Meebo as an IM client. G.ho.st users also get 3. GB of free online storage, which can be used for saving things while away from a home PC.

Sparc ( .landing page. ) integrates Thinkfree Office, 50 GB of online storage, IM, VoIP, and a DVD conversion tool. Sparc is a little different from the other two apps, as it requires a small self-running Java download to get going.

Additional Web 2.0 Apps to Check Out

Scrapblog is one of those very rare online applications that almost makes you forget you're working on the Web and not a desktop. It's not as fast nor as capable as desktop application can be, but it's close. And here's another service that aspires to the same thing: Glide 2.0.

Glide 2.0 is a great-looking and ambitious Web suite full of day-to-day applications, including a word processor, a site builder, photo editor, and much more.
